Races for 2-year-olds are traditional in Thoroughbred racing throughout the world, and the modern 2-year-old runs less frequently than ever before — just 3.2 times on average over the past five years. 2-year-old racing statistics in 2009 continued to parallel the broader industry trend of reduced starters, races and purses. Less than one-third of the registered foals of 2007 started at age 2, and those that did raced for an average purse of $33,363, down slightly from 2008.
