Equibase Announces Final North American Earnings Leaders for 2011

Todd Pletcher, Ramon Dominguez and Midwest Thoroughbreds finished 2011 as the leading trainer, jockey and owner, respectively, by North American earnings, according to final statistics released today by Equibase Company LLC, the Thoroughbred industry’s official database for racing information.

Belmont Stakes (Gr. 1) and Breeders’ Cup Classic (Gr. 1) winner Drosselmeyer led all Thoroughbreds in 2011 with North American earnings of $2,927,000. Following Drosselmeyer were Shackleford with $1,950,437 and Game on Dude with $1,917,400.

The year-end compilations are distributed annually by Equibase and include results from Thoroughbred racing in only North America from January 1, 2011, through December 31, 2011. Expanded North American racing leaders’ lists that include all trainers, jockeys, owners and horses are available within Stats Central at equibase.com.

Pletcher, who led all trainers last year and previously topped the trainers’ list from 2004-2007, sent out the winners of 254 races from 1,016 starts for earnings of $17,186,956 in 2011. Runner-up for the second consecutive year was Steven Asmussen, whose horses won 348 races from 1,681 starts for earnings of $16,287,685 in 2011.

Completing the list of top 10 trainers by North American earnings in 2011 were Bob Baffert, $14,104,834 (130 wins / 503 starts); Bill Mott, $10,731,249 (101/578); Graham Motion, $8,818,283 (116/535); Jerry Hollendorfer, $7,866,623 (251/1,155); Mark Casse, $7,825,205 (140/670); Dale Romans, $7,690,693 (87/603); John Sadler, $6,753,058 (106/534); and Michael J. Maker, $6,721,836 (158/734).

Ramon Dominguez, with earnings of $20,264,822, again topped the annual North American leading jockeys’ list in 2011 having also led all riders the previous year. Dominguez rode the winners of 348 races from 1,424 mounts. John Velazquez, also for the second consecutive year, finished second, with 248 wins from 1,223 mounts and earnings of $18,622,964.

Rounding out the list of top 10 jockeys by North American earnings in 2011 were Javier Castellano, $15,675,977 (278 wins / 1,438 mounts); Joel Rosario, $15,633,292 (274/1,248); Rafael Bejarano, $14,922,701 (244/1,176); Julien Leparoux, $13,874,620 (247/1,239); Luis Contreras, $12,307,455 (220/1,134); Garrett Gomez, $11,870,360 (137/782); Jose Lezcano, $10,713,658 (182/1,047); and Patrick Husbands, $9,849,835 (193/846).

Midwest Thoroughbreds Inc. won 418 races from 1,423 starts and earned $6,307,278 in North America in 2011 to lead all owners. Runner-up was Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey with 114 victories from 490 starts and earnings of $4,890,581.

Completing the list of top 10 owners by North American earnings in 2011 were WinStar Farm LLC, $4,577,434 (28 wins / 167 starts); George and Lori Hall, $4,117,162 (41/226); Zayat Stables LLC, $3,896,839 (49/242); Repole Stable, $3,804,613 (61/262); Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, $3,558,652 (12/53); Live Oak Plantation, $3,469,350 (45/210); Maggi Moss, $3,457,044 (171/499); and Team Valor International, $3,206,885 (21/78).

In addition to the official North American racing leaders’ lists available at equibase.com, Equibase also provides a second set of leaders’ lists that includes the results of the Dubai World Cup card from March 26, 2011, at Meydan Racecourse. Including these international earnings, Godolphin Stable LLC was the leading owner with earnings of $7,769,387. There were no changes in the other categories.
