February 1 Deadline To Name Foals Of 2001

The Jockey Club reminds owners and breeders that a valid attempt to name foals of 2001 must be made by February 1, 2003 to avoid a $50 late fee.

As an aid in selecting a desired name, The Jockey Club again has published on its web site a list of 47,120 names released from active use on January 1. The majority of the released names are those of horses over 10 years old which have not raced or been bred during the preceding five years.

Owners and breeders are also encouraged to consult the online Names Book at any time to check the availability of potential Thoroughbred names.

The list of recently released names and the online Names Book are available through the “Name a Thoroughbred” icon on The Jockey Club home page, located at http://home.jockeyclub.com.

Jockey Club InteractiveTM, used by more than 15,000 owners and breeders, is the quickest and easiest way to submit name applications and is available at no charge through http://home.jockeyclub.com.

Owners and breeders who name their Thoroughbreds electronically receive their first choice approximately 75 percent of the time.

Otherwise, completed name applications should be mailed by February 1 to The Jockey Club, 821 Corporate Drive, Lexington, KY 40503-2794.

“Jockey Club Interactive and the online Names Book continue to grow in popularity,” said Matt Iuliano, vice president of registration services. “Over 60 percent of all name claims are now made over the Internet.”
