February 1 Deadline To Name Foals Of 2000

The Jockey Club reminds owners and breeders that a valid attempt to name foals of 2000 must be made by February 1, 2002, to avoid a $50 late fee.

As an aid in selecting a desired name, The Jockey Club again has published on its web site a list of 41,835 Thoroughbred names released from active use on January 1. Accessible through the “Name A Thoroughbred” icon at http://home.jockeyclub.com, the list of released names is updated daily to remove names as they are claimed.

Many of the released names are from the large foal crops of the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. The names were released under the provisions of Rule 6(E) of The Principal Rules and Requirements of The American Stud Book, which was amended in 1993 to release the names of horses over 10 years old which have not raced or been bred during the preceding five years, rather than the preceding 10 years.

In addition to the recently released names, owners and breeders are also encouraged to consult the online Names Book, also available through the “Name a Thoroughbred” icon, to check the availability of potential names. Phonetic software upgrades, however, raise the possibility that a similar-sounding name may already be in use.

Jockey Club InteractiveTM is the quickest and easiest way to submit name applications and is available at no charge through the “Interactive Registry” icon at http://home.jockeyclub.com. Results of electronic name claims can be retrieved within one-to-two business days.

Otherwise, completed name applications should be mailed to The Jockey Club, 821 Corporate Drive, Lexington, KY 40503-2794.
