Broadbent, McClain, Rubinstein Appointed to Equibase Management Committee

Richard F. “Happy” Broadbent IV, a vice president of Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI), Ellen McClain, executive vice president and chief operating officer with the New York Racing Association, and Josh Rubinstein, vice president for development with Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, have been appointed by the Thoroughbred Racing Associations of North America (TRA) to the Equibase Management Committee, it was announced today by Nick Nicholson, chairman of Equibase.

Broadbent replaces Bill Mudd, who served two years as a member of the committee. McClain replaces Hal Handel, who served two terms as a member, while Rubinstein replaces Craig Fravel, who served as a member since 1996 before being named president of Breeders’ Cup Ltd. earlier this year. Other members of the committee are Peter Berube, Christopher McErlean, and Mike Rogers representing the TRA; and Sherwood Chillingworth, C. Steven Duncker, James L. Gagliano, Ian D. Highet, Nick Nicholson and Ogden Mills Phipps representing The Jockey Club.

“Bill was very active during his time on the committee, we are deeply indebted to Hal for his dedication and service to Equibase for two different terms,” said Nicholson, “ and we were extremely fortunate to have had the benefit of Craig’s leadership over the past 15 years. Like Bill, Hal and Craig,” Nicholson continued, “Happy, Ellen and Josh possess the business acumen, diverse skill sets and a passion that will benefit Equibase and the racing industry in the years ahead.” Broadbent became a vice president of CDI in 2007, when his family-owned Bloodstock Research Information Services (BRIS), Thoroughbred Sports Network and their related online betting platforms were acquired by the company. In addition, he serves as general manager of CDI’s Lexington division which includes BRIS and the customer support center for TwinSpires.com. Broadbent is also a Thoroughbred owner and breeder. McClain joined NYRA in 2009 and served as the organization’s senior vice president and chief financial officer before being promoted to executive vice president and chief operating officer in October of this year. Before joining NYRA, McClain served as the vice president of finance for Hearst-Argyle Television, Inc. Prior to that, McClain served as the senior vice president and chief financial officer for Granite Broadcasting Corporation.

Rubinstein joined the Del Mar staff in 1995 and served as the track’s director of marketing from 2003 until his promotion to vice president for development in 2008. His responsibilities include sponsorships, corporate marketing, simulcasting and wagering development and broadcast production. Rubinstein also worked for ABC Sports for several years upon graduation from San Diego State University.
